We're going to keep finding good local food people.

Buy Local

Support the people raising it first

None of this works without the farming community. The hams, the bacon, the whole idea — it all starts with a farm and the people who keep it running. This page is a small spotlight for those places, beginning with one we happen to know well.

Mulberry Lane Farm & Market

Huntingtown, Maryland

Mulberry Lane is a real farm market on real farm ground in Calvert County. The kind of place where you can ask what the animal ate and get an actual answer. Where the pork chops, bacon, and sausage come from animals that lived on the same soil the market sits on.

We wanted to put a spotlight on a local market doing things the old, patient way — not because it is perfect, but because it is the kind of place worth driving to. Go once and the grocery-store package stops being interesting.

Why bother buying local

  • You can find out exactly what the animal ate, where it stood, and who handled it. Try that at the grocery store.
  • The money stays in Calvert County instead of leaving it — which is the only reason places like this still exist.
  • It cooks differently. Better fat, better cure, better result. You'll notice on the first pan of bacon.

Send somebody their way

The single most useful thing you can do for a small market is tell one person about it.

More people worth knowing

Batch 001 proved the concept. Batch 002 needs a belly. None of this happens without the farming community — and this is the kind of place that pork ought to come from. Follow along in the Meat Locker →
